2011年3月11日的大地震和产生的海啸袭击了日本仙台市海岸，破坏了福岛核电站，超过10000人遇难。在过去的三年里，仙台只是采用了临时纪念仪式来纪念这些受害者。为了改变这个现状，麻省理工学院研究生Beomki Lee创建了一个概念设计来作为一个创新的新的纪念空间，这个纪念性建筑被称为[ME]morial。
